Aesop X Northern Light Candles

We often get asked what candles are recommended for the Aesop Oil burner and our Addition Studio oil burners. Let’s have a look at the Aesop oil burner and the candle we recommend.

Australian designer Henry Wilson teamed up with Aesop to create the Brass oil burner, one of the brand’s first ever design objects in their Aesop Home range. The piece follows in true Studio Henry Wilson fashion with his pared back utilitarian design aesthetic, laden with the contrast of organic sculptural elements. The one kilogram oil burner is made of solid brass with a refined minimalistic silhouette that is adaptable to any living space. As Wilson intended, no two brass oil burners are the same due to its unique design process of lost-wax casting. Over extended use the weathering of the brass will allow for an organic appearance of the patina. Using the oil burner is simple! All that is needed to start up your oil burner is a couple drops of your favourable essential oil, heat and a tea light.

That brings us to an often overlooked item which is the humble tea light. There is an assortment of candles on the market but what is not known is the benefits and downfalls of each type. Here at JAU we recommend accompanying the brass oil burner with Northern Lights Beeswax candles. Here's a bit of information as to why we prefer beeswax candles.

The three main types of candles on the market are Paraffin, Soy and Beeswax.

Paraffin
Typical tealight candles are made of paraffin wax, a by-product of crude oil. Burning it in an unventilated room allows the toxins to accumulate and has been known to cause respiratory and skin issues. The material also goes through an extensive manufacturing process which includes using bleach to whiten the wax and once hardened through the use of a known carcinogenic chemical, Acrolyn, the material is shipped off to companies which will add their own synthetic fragrances and dyes.

Soy
Most soy candles also contain paraffin wax as to be categorised as a ‘soy wax blend’ the candle must only contain 51% of soy wax. The manufacturing process is environmentally destructive, with forest clearing in the amazon to create plantations. Manufacturing soy wax also involves energy and chemical intensive processes – it is no longer a natural product but a highly processed product.

Beeswax
Lastly, in the case of beeswax and specifically Northern Lights Beeswax candles, there are many benefits both health wise and in terms of environmental impact. Low temperature heating and rain water (as opposed to chlorinated tap water) is used to purify and create Northern Light candles, the processes are simple and do not involve adding harmful chemicals. The worker bees collect wax from the natural forests nearby so there is no need to clear land to plant flowers for the bees.  Beeswax candles are also known to produce negative ions when burned, which help to neutralise pollutants in the air.

Beeswax candles are the perfect match to pair with the quality of the Aesop Brass Oil burner. Specifically Northern Light Candles last for 7 to 8 hours in comparison to the 3 hours of paraffin tea light so you can get the most out of each burn, they also have the safest fume rating of any candlelight meaning toxin free air while you enjoy the aroma of your oil burner.  Northern Light Candles are smokeless so as not to interfere with the scent of the essential oils along with other benefits which are listed on the Northern Light online site.
